The Borders Big Band was formed in 1978 by a group of musicians who wanted to play & re-create the music of the big band era.
Based in the Scottish Borders, The Borders Big Band has performed at hundreds at concerts and dances all over the South of Scotland, Edinburgh & The Lothians, Fife and the North of England. The Band is run on a non-profit making basis, and all proceeds from gigs go to charity.
The Band's repertoire is drawn from the music of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and many other of the great Big Bands.
In 1993, to celebrate the Borders Big Band's fifteenth year , world renowned trombonist Don Lusher appeared as guest soloist at our anniversary concert, and also appeared again with the band at the The Maltings Arts Centre, Berwick-upon Tweed, in 1994.
The Band was also delighted to have the legendary jazz trumpet player Kenny Baker appear as a guest soloist at two later concerts in 1995.
In 1997, Gordon Campbell, trombonist with the BBC Big Band, appeared as our guest solo artiste at a concert in his native town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Last year the band was successful in being awarded a grant from the Awards for All scheme, to purchase new jackets, music stands & lights. We have also produced our first CD which is now available at our gigs or by e-mailing us direct.
Now in its twenty-eighth year, The Borders Big Band is still much in demand continues to entertain audiences wherever it performs, proving that Big Band music is still very much alive & well.
